Mosaic Tours to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp - Berlin

We highly recommend a tour of a concentration camp when visiting Germany. Although it can be a deeply emotional experience, these remaining original sites are the best way to learn about the horrors instituted by the Nazi regime.

Just 35km outside of Berlin in the neighbouring town of Oranienburg lies Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp.  Mainly used by the Nazis to inter political prisoners, Sachsenhausen was one of the first concentration camps and was also the site of the headquarters of the Nazi's extensive concentration camp network.  At the conclusion of the war the the camp was used by the Soviets to inter Nazi war criminals.

Mosaic Tours are a non-profit organisation that run tours to what remains of the facility with all profits donated back to the memorial itself, as well as Amnesty International. Mosaic's guides are experts in their field, often with a degree or masters in Nazi history, and approach this very emotionally charged topic with sensitivity and a broad knowledge base.   This, combined with their emphasis on small groups,  allows the guides to answer questions and to facilitate a dialogue with participants that is simply not possible with many other tours.

During the tour your guide will talk about the region where the camp is located, and the reactions of the neighbouring residents, explain the functions of the various remaining or reconstructed buildings, as well as offering a valuable insight into daily life in the camp.  They will also provide the historical context that led to the creation of the camp, as well as explain why the Sachsenhausen site, in particular, is of importance within the Nazi concentration camp system.

A tour of a concentration camp can be a deeply emotional experience and it is not to be taken lightly, but it is fascinating and in line with Mosaic's mission statement, increasing awareness of our past will hopefully influence our future for the better.
