Nikolaiviertel - Berlin

If you are looking to try some classic Berlin cuisine along with a locally brewed beer while in the Nikolaiviertel we recommend popping in to the Brauhaus Georgbraeu.

Overview

The Nikolaiviertel in Berlin Mitte translates as the "Nicholas quarter" and gets its name from the Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas' Church) located at its centre.  The quarter is the site of the original settlement of Berlin, which was located across the river from the neighbouring settlement of Cölln.  Throughout the years, the medieval lanes and alleyways were preserved until, unfortunately, a large amount of the area was destroyed by allied air raids and the Battle for Berlin during World War Two.  Located in former East Berlin the Nikolaiviertel was restored in a mixture of historical reconstruction and new buildings, lending the area a unique appearance.  It is home to 5 museums, 30 cafes and restaurants and 50 shops, along with an interesting walking trail which includes 20 stations detailing a different slice of the history of the area.  The Nikolaiviertel also hosts many events, including street festivals and concerts - Check out our Events page for up do date information on what is happening.
